So, here we are in the middle of audition season and your stress is at an all-time high!
Here are a few tips to help you survive the day and nail those auditions.
BE PREPARED
I can’t say this enough… Plan Ahead! Nothing will add to your audition day stress like forgetting (or remembering) something at the last minute that could have been taken care of months or weeks ago!
Since you will usually be traveling to auditions, make yourself a checklist of everything you will need to pack. Be sure to include:
Your book - make sure you have your audition pieces plus a few other options that are performance ready. You also need your resume and a headshot.
Your wardrobe - if your audition includes a dance portion make sure you have EVERYTHING you need in your bag! Be sure you have your audition clothes and shoes to change into after you dance as well as a comb or brush, deodorant and whatever you need to make yourself presentable.
Water and snacks - stay hydrated and have some snacks with you in case you don’t have time to leave the area to eat.
STAY POSITIVE
From the moment you walk in the door try to keep a positive attitude.
Put a confident smile on your face as you approach the check-in desk. You don’t have to chit-chat with everyone but do smile and be friendly. Remember you are “auditioning” from the moment you walk in the door. This is not the time to be arguing with your parents, on the phone with friends, or distracted in any other way.
A good way to tune out other people and stay focused is to bring your earbuds and play your audition material or some relaxation music. You can also use visualization to keep yourself focused.
AVOID NEGATIVITY
Above all else, never… ever… EVER engage in gossip with the other waiting auditioners. The music world is INCREDIBLY SMALL and everyone is listening on these days.
Do not talk negatively about other singers, audition experiences, or programs!
If you can’t say something positive just smile, try to change the subject or put in those earbuds!
Remember, another person’s negativity can rub off on you so try to avoid auditioners that are giving off a negative vibe. A positive attitude will help you have a positive experience… a negative attitude will ensure a negative experience!
These are just a few suggestions and I would love to hear your strategies for avoiding audition stress.
